The NTG Canadian Consortium is focused on raising awareness of dementia and it’s impact on adults with an intellectual disability both within the disability community as well as the dementia community at large.

Our goal is to share current knowledge and resources and provide advocacy for access to quality support and services for this specific population.

Advocacy

The Consortium advocates for the inclusion of adults with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers in dementia planning and services across Canada.

We enhance caregiver’s understanding of dementia and provide strategies for continuous quality support of adults with intellectual disabilities affected by dementia.

The Consortium advised on matters related to adults with intellectual disabilities and their families during the development of A Dementia Strategy for Canada: Together We Aspire (2019). During that time, we reached out to our various networks across Canada to support inclusion of this population in the Canadian National Dementia Strategy. This inclusion in the national strategy was an important step in acknowledging the needs of both adults with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers.

National Training Workshops

The 2-Day and 3-Day training workshops focus on developing an understanding of dementia and key strategies to enhance quality of life for adults with intellectual disabilities and caregivers affected by dementia. We use an evidence-informed Canadian national curriculum.

Currently there are over 150 Canadian Consortium Affiliated Provincial Trainers in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia.

Produce Resources

The Consortium in partnership with Reena recently undertook a broad-based 16-month project funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) through the Dementia Strategy Fund. It focused on producing a Canadian guide and additional resources to support adults with intellectual disabilities, living in the community and affected by dementia, and their caregivers. The project was completed in 2024 and the resources and publications are provided on this website for free download.

Engage with various communities of interest

Members of the Consortium participate:

  • in workshops and panel discussions on aging, dementia and disability.
  • on local, national and international committees to gain new knowledge and promote learning including the Canadian Dementia Care Coalition.
  • we promote partnerships between organizations within the disability sector, health care and aging service sectors,

We are open to collaboration with organizations and researchers interested in submitting proposals related to dementia and adults with intellectual disabilities.
